Before & After: Tropicana Pure Premium

More divisive design from PepsiCo. (For anyone who missed it, the redesign of the Pepsi, Diet Pepsi, Sierra Mist, and Mountain Dew -- or "mtn dew" -- drinks was somewhat controversial.) I don't think this is at quite the same level, but I've already heard a wide variety of opinions just offhand at casual, non-design-related gatherings.

This is the new look of Tropicana Pure Premium:

And this is the entire line Before:

There are also some good side-by-side shots on Flickr here and here.

Personally, I think the change is eye-catching -- literally, it caught my eye as I was rushing past the juice freezers on Sunday. I think because it's blocking well.

The #1 complaint I've heard is that it's harder to find the specific type of juice (Ruby Red, Lots of Pulp, Calcium, etc.) you're looking for. Someone also mentioned that the new version looks more "generic."

What are your thoughts?

VitaMeal - A Nutritious Revolution in Vending

Designer Irina Ivanova is proposing the development and promotion of a unique form and system of vending machines filled with healthy food products that will encourage a social change in children’s eating habits.

Vitameal1

The health of youth in the United States is now negatively affected by dangerous eating habits that may eventually lead to obesity. Vending Machines are one of the “easiest” and most convenient ways for children to access snacks, frequently junk food, in schools.

Vitameal3

The packaging design for VitaMeal food products is based on a unique shape that will be more appealing to younger audience. Each individual package will contain a “face” of a character that is intended to emotionally present the contents of the food inside. The size of each package contains just one serving size of any food or liquid, to facilitate better control of portion sizes.

Vitameal4

The new vending machine is designed to be modular in nature to better adapt to different spatial environments. By being modular it allows more kids to access it during class breaks and it will host more products. It can be placed against a wall as a single unit or in multiples of 3, or it can be free standing in the center of the room, allowing access from any side. Each machine is built with a refrigerating unit in order to host food and drink products that both require and those that don’t need refrigeration.

Vitameal5

The new machine will have a Card Reader that will simplify the food buying process. The built-in speaker verifies to the consumer their chosen food or drink selection. The automated speaking device also greets the customer after the machine reads their card.

The Vita-Smart Cards are designed to mirror individual graphic characters used on the VitaMeal packages. Kids may chose a card based on their favorite personality. Each card comes with a “Smart Chip” that functions both as a credit card and at the same time allows parents to control what their children may or may not eat, thus protecting a child from a potential allergic reaction to a specific food. Kids may use their card when recycling the packages to recieve a credit amount, to be deposited back onto their account.

Another Fine Mess

Anotherfinemess

Lovely package designs done by Arianna Toft while studying at Pratt Institute. Arianna is now a designer for Pearlfisher.

The Assignment: Choose a famous person. They could be from the past or present, political or celebrity, scientist or adventurer. Research them and find out what they're known for, what they should've been known for, their personality, habits, quirks, likes, dislikes. Based on your research, design a product inspired by the person.

The Solution: Another Fine Mess
A line of cleaning and home repair liquid solutions inspired by the comic duo, Laurel and Hardy. Always getting into trouble and creating a mess, the two always had a fantastically absurd story behind each dilemma. Rather than looking at a mess as a problem, Another Fine Mess is for those who see the light-hearted and funny side in potentially disastrous situations.
